Behind the scenes - a composite

Parents are often surprised at their newborn session when I ask them to hold the baby's head in some way (but that I will photoshop them out later).

Even as a new parent I guess we sometimes don't stop to think about some of the poses we see newborns  "performing" during a professional session. Of course a newborn can't lay with their head on their arms perfectly crossed with their head held upright. Duh.  More importantly, they cannot hold their head in the palms of their own hands, haha.

Newer photographers may not realize that these photos are compositions, or a combination of more than one photo, and for baby's safety that is how it should ALWAYS be.

For this photo, I made the original composition with photos posed exactly as above, but we had forgotten to put a headband on her, so it just didn't look finished to me. I decided to use the top of her head from a previous series of shots and it actually worked out perfect!

Moral of the story? Portrait Innovations or Sears won't be offering these poses in your package ;)
